The 'Sunken' American Battleships Rose From Pearl Harbor To Erase A Japanese Fleet In 16 Minutes

October 25th, 1944. 0353 hours. Surigao Strait, the southern gateway to Leyte Gulf in the Philippines. Six American battleships lie across the northern mouth of the strait in a single line, steaming slowly east, guns trained out to starboard. Coming up the strait toward them, in column, is a Japanese battle force built around the battleships Yamashiro and Fuso.
Five of those six American battleships had been sunk or wrecked at Pearl Harbor one thousand and fifty-three days earlier.
West Virginia had taken seven torpedoes and settled into the harbor mud. California had gone down by the bow with her hull open. Tennessee had been wedged against her mooring quays by a sunken sister. Maryland had been bombed at her berth. Pennsylvania had been hit in drydock. In December 1941, photographs of these ships were printed in newspapers around the world as proof that the American battle fleet was finished. Japanese naval planners wrote them off the ledger. Several American officers privately agreed. The age of the battleship was over, and these particular battleships were scrap.
At 0353 that morning, West Virginia's forward turrets came around to bearing. Her first salvo of eight 16-inch armor-piercing shells crossed 22,800 yards of dark water and hit the Japanese flagship Yamashiro.
Sixteen minutes later, the Japanese Southern Force had effectively ceased to exist. Two battleships, one heavy cruiser, and three destroyers were sunk or crippled. Roughly four thousand Japanese sailors were dead, including the admiral commanding. One destroyer escaped. And the last battleship-versus-battleship gunnery action in human history was over, won by ships that the enemy had already counted as destroyed.
This is how ships raised out of the mud of Pearl Harbor came back and annihilated the fleet that put them there.
To understand why Surigao Strait mattered, you have to understand what was happening two hundred miles to the north.
On October 20th, 1944, the United States began landing the Sixth Army on the eastern shore of Leyte. It was the return to the Philippines, and it was catastrophically vulnerable. Nearly six hundred transports, cargo ships, and landing craft were anchored in Leyte Gulf, unloading men and supplies across open beaches. If a Japanese surface force reached that anchorage, it would not fight a battle. It would conduct a massacre, and the invasion would collapse.
The Imperial Japanese Navy understood this perfectly. Operation Sho-Go committed almost the entire remaining strength of the fleet to a single converging attack on Leyte Gulf. Vice Admiral Takeo Kurita's powerful Center Force, including the superbattleships Yamato and Musashi, would come through San Bernardino Strait from the north. A carrier force under Admiral Jisaburo Ozawa would sail south from Japan as bait, empty of aircraft, offered up deliberately to pull Admiral Halsey's Third Fleet away.
And through the narrow southern door, Surigao Strait, would come Vice Admiral Shoji Nishimura with battleships Yamashiro and Fuso, the heavy cruiser Mogami, and four destroyers. Trailing about forty miles behind him, uncoordinated and barely in communication, came Vice Admiral Kiyohide Shima with two more heavy cruisers, a light cruiser, and four destroyers.
Standing in Nishimura's way was Rear Admiral Jesse Oldendorf, commanding the fire support and bombardment group of the Seventh Fleet. His job for the previous five days had been to sit off the beaches and pound Japanese positions ashore. Now he was told to hold the strait.
He had six battleships. Every one of them had been designed before 1920. Their best speed was around 20 knots, some less. Yamashiro and Fuso were older still, laid down in 1912 and 1913. On both sides, this was a fight between museum pieces, and every serious naval officer in 1944 knew that battles were now decided by carrier aircraft. Two days earlier, American carrier planes had put nineteen torpedoes and seventeen bombs into Musashi and sunk her. That was how modern naval war worked.
Except at night, in a strait twelve miles wide, with no aircraft in the sky. There, the rules were the rules of 1916.
And by every visible measure, Oldendorf's battle line should not have been able to fight them.
Start with the ammunition. His battleships had spent five days firing high-capacity bombardment shells at Japanese bunkers and trench lines. High-capacity shells are thin-walled and full of explosive. They are excellent against earthworks and nearly useless against battleship armor. The armor-piercing rounds needed for a surface action were the minority of what remained in the magazines, and the resupply ships were far away. Oldendorf's staff calculated that the battle line could sustain perhaps a few minutes of full-rate armor-piercing fire before the problem became serious. He gave orders accordingly. Open fire late. Fire deliberately. Waste nothing.
Then there was the condition of the ships themselves. Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Mississippi were essentially prewar battleships with additions bolted on. They had received new anti-aircraft batteries and search radar, but their main battery fire control still ran through the Mark 3 fire control radar, a set designed in 1941 that produced a usable range but a coarse, uncertain bearing. In a night action against a maneuvering target, coarse bearing means near misses.
Nishimura, for his part, had reason for confidence in the dark. The Imperial Japanese Navy had spent the interwar decades building the finest night-fighting force in the world. Its optics were superb: Yamashiro carried rangefinders and night binoculars of a quality no other navy matched. Its crews had trained relentlessly at night torpedo attack, and at Savo Island in August 1942 that training had destroyed four Allied heavy cruisers in about half an hour. Japanese doctrine assumed that at night, the side that saw first shot first, and Japanese lookouts saw farther than anyone.
Nishimura was pressing into the strait on a schedule, in a straight line, at 20 knots, expecting a confused close-range brawl in which his optics and his torpedoes would decide the matter. It was, on the evidence of the previous two years of the Pacific war, a reasonable expectation.
It was also completely obsolete, because of what the United States Navy had done to three of those Pearl Harbor wrecks.
Salvage at Pearl Harbor began within days of the attack and became one of the largest engineering operations of the war. Navy divers working in oil-blackened water logged roughly twenty thousand hours underwater across some five thousand dives. West Virginia was the hardest case. Seven torpedoes had opened her port side; the largest single hole ran about 120 feet along her hull. Divers built and placed enormous timber and concrete patches over the wounds, sealed her, and pumped her out. She was refloated on May 17th, 1942, more than five months after she sank. Inside a sealed storeroom, the salvage crews found the bodies of three sailors and a calendar with the days marked off by hand through December 23rd. Those men had lived sixteen days inside a sunken battleship.
She could have been scrapped there. The Navy made a different decision. West Virginia was patched, floated, and sent to Puget Sound Navy Yard, and what came out of that shipyard in July 1944 was not the ship that sank.
The reconstruction went to the frame. Anti-torpedo bulges were built onto her sides, widening her beam from 108 feet to 114 feet, which permanently disqualified her from transiting the Panama Canal locks. Her old casemate secondary guns were torn out and replaced with eight twin 5-inch/38 caliber dual-purpose mounts, the finest medium naval gun of the war. Her cage masts were gone, replaced by a compact tower superstructure. Her displacement rose past 40,000 tons.
But the decisive change was invisible from the outside. West Virginia, and her similarly rebuilt sisters Tennessee and California, received the Mark 8 fire control radar mounted on the Mark 34 main battery director.
The Mark 8 was one of the most consequential instruments the United States built in the Second World War. It operated on a wavelength of roughly ten centimeters, radiating through an antenna array of dozens of small dielectric rods, and it scanned its beam rapidly across a narrow arc rather than staring in one direction. That gave it something no optical rangefinder and no earlier radar could offer: it could resolve range to within about fifteen yards and bearing to a small fraction of a degree, on a moving target, in absolute darkness, and it could show the operator a picture in which individual ships in an enemy column appeared as separate returns.
Feed that data into the Ford Mark 8 Rangekeeper, an electromechanical analog computer that continuously solved for target course, target speed, own ship's motion, wind, drift, barrel wear, and propellant temperature, and the result is a battleship that does not need to see anything at all. The director tracks radar. The rangekeeper computes. The turrets follow in real time. The guns fire on a solution generated entirely by electronics and gearing.
The gunnery officer no longer waits for a flash on the horizon. He watches a screen.
Against this, Japanese night optics were not an advantage. They were an obsolete technology, and Nishimura did not know it.
Oldendorf built his defense in layers, and he built it to make Japanese doctrine work against itself.
At the southern entrance, spread across the approaches, he placed 39 PT boats in thirteen sections. Their job was not to sink anything. It was to find the Japanese, report continuously, and force Nishimura to reveal his course and speed early.
Behind them, along both shores of the strait, he stationed his destroyer squadrons, positioned to attack from the flanks out of the shadow of the land, where Japanese lookouts would be searching against a dark coastline.
And across the northern exit, he laid his six battleships and eight cruisers broadside-on to the strait, so that every American main gun could fire while only the forward guns of the leading Japanese ship could answer. This is the crossing of the T, the ideal of naval gunnery since the age of sail, and it is almost never achieved because it requires an enemy who will steam into it. The geography of Surigao Strait guaranteed that Nishimura had to.
First contact came at 2236 on the 24th, when PT-131 picked up the Japanese column on radar. The PT boats attacked repeatedly through the small hours, scored no torpedo hits, lost boats to Japanese gunfire, and did their real job perfectly: Oldendorf had a continuous plot of the enemy's advance for hours.
At about 0300, the destroyers went in. Destroyer Squadron 54 attacked from both flanks. USS Melvin's torpedoes struck the battleship Fuso, which fell out of formation, burning. The destroyer Yamagumo blew up. Michishio was left dead in the water. Asagumo had her bow torn away. In minutes, Nishimura's screen was gutted. A second wave from Destroyer Squadron 24 and a third from Squadron 56 followed, and Yamashiro herself took torpedo hits that cut her speed.
Nishimura kept going. He had orders and a schedule, and he was now steaming toward the northern exit with one damaged battleship, one heavy cruiser, and one destroyer.
At 0316, West Virginia's radar picked up the Japanese column at roughly 44,000 yards. For the next 37 minutes, the ship held a complete firing solution on a target no one aboard could see. Her turrets tracked continuously. Her rangekeeper ran. Oldendorf held fire, closing the range, protecting his ammunition.
At 0353, at 22,800 yards, West Virginia fired.
The first salvo hit. Eight 16-inch armor-piercing shells, each weighing 2,700 pounds, fired by a ship that had been resting on the bottom of Pearl Harbor thirty months earlier, and the opening salvo struck the Japanese flagship. Tennessee and California opened within a minute, their Mark 8 sets producing the same result: straddles from the first salvos, then hits.
The three older battleships had a very different night. Maryland could not resolve the target on her Mark 3 radar. Her fire control party solved the problem by ranging on the shell splashes of the ships that could see, and put 48 rounds of 16-inch into the darkness. Mississippi held a solution for only a moment and fired a single full salvo of twelve 14-inch shells at 0408. Pennsylvania never obtained a firing solution at all and did not fire a single round of her main battery.
That contrast is the entire lesson of the battle. Same class of ship. Same guns. Same crews' worth of training. One had 1944 electronics; the other had 1941 electronics, and one of them was a spectator at the last battleship engagement in history.
Yamashiro absorbed it. She continued to steam, and she continued to fire, and she scored no hits on any American battleship. At 0409, with American cruisers and battleships firing across the strait and the destroyer USS Albert W. Grant caught in the crossfire and hit by both sides, Oldendorf ordered check fire.
The battle line had fired 285 rounds in sixteen minutes: 93 from West Virginia, 69 from Tennessee, 63 from California, 48 from Maryland, 12 from Mississippi, none from Pennsylvania.
Yamashiro turned to retire, took further torpedo hits, and capsized at 0419 with Nishimura and almost her entire crew. Fuso had already gone. Mogami, wrecked and burning, was scuttled later that morning. Of Nishimura's seven ships, one destroyer survived: Shigure, which came out of the strait alone.
Shima, arriving behind the disaster, saw burning wreckage in the water, ordered a torpedo attack, lost a cruiser to collision, and withdrew. His force was hunted down by aircraft over the following days.
Japanese dead in Surigao Strait numbered around four thousand. American losses in the battle line were zero. The only serious American damage was Albert W. Grant, hit by friendly and enemy fire, with 34 men killed.
Measure the result against the strategic problem. The southern arm of the Japanese plan had been destroyed completely, and it had been destroyed before it ever came within gun range of the transports at Leyte. Six hundred vulnerable ships in Leyte Gulf were never touched from the south. And it had cost the U.S. Navy 285 main battery rounds and one damaged destroyer.
That morning, the northern door was a different story. Kurita's Center Force came through San Bernardino Strait unopposed, because Halsey had taken the Third Fleet north after Ozawa's empty carriers, and ran headlong into six escort carriers and their screen off Samar. Three destroyers and a destroyer escort charged a battle fleet including Yamato to buy time, and were destroyed doing it. Samar is remembered for extraordinary courage in the face of a failure of disposition.
Surigao is the opposite kind of story. Surigao is what happens when the disposition is right, the engineering is right, and the institution has spent two years quietly fixing what was broken. There was no charge, no desperation, no heroic sacrifice required. There was a plot, a firing solution, and sixteen minutes of arithmetic.
No battleship has fired on another battleship since. Nobody has crossed the T since. Surigao Strait is the last page of a chapter of naval warfare that began with sail and line of battle, and it was written by ships that had been photographed as burning wrecks in December 1941.
The deeper point survives the battleship entirely. In 1941 the United States lost a battle line at anchor. It could have written those hulls off, as most navies would have, and as Japanese planners assumed it had. Instead it spent thousands of diving hours pulling them off the bottom, then spent two years and a shipyard's full attention turning three of them into something their designers in 1916 would not have recognized, built around a radar set and an analog computer rather than around armor and guns.
Japan spent those same two years perfecting night optics and torpedo doctrine that had been the best in the world in 1942.
At 0353 on October 25th, 1944, in the dark, at 22,800 yards, those two decisions met. One side saw a screen. The other side saw nothing at all until the shells arrived.
The old ships from the mud of Pearl Harbor won, and nobody ever called them obsolete again.
